The Vision
To create an event where Subaru Owners from throughout the country can come and meet like minded individuals and groups to promote the enjoyment of 'Scooby' ownership and at the same time show their generosity towards charitable organizations..... John (Lord) Harding.
The Northern Big One (NBO) 2011 will be the Eigth year that Cumbrian Scoobs have organized the event. This is the biggest and best Subaru show in the UK if not Europe.
The NBO 'vision' started several years ago, when John Harding attended and event at Gunthorp near Nottingham to see the 'Big One'. This gathering consisted of around 100 scoobs meeting in a field. On the long journey home, John started thinking that possibly he could organize a similar event on a larger scale.
For six months, John was unable to get the idea of a 'super meet' out of his head and spoke to members of both his local clubs, who thought even though the idea may be 'crazy', it may just work. The initial plans took no more than 10 minutes to put together with a moderate target of around 50 cars . Following the publication of his intentions on Scoobynet, the first NBO, held in 2003 attracted over 400 cars.
The motivation behind the event was a simple one........Subaru owners meeting in a field to admire each others cars. In 2010 we decided that our nominated charity would be the Army benevolent Fund , a fantastic charity close to everyone’s heart, The nominated Charity for 2011 is yet to be confirmed.
The location chosen for the NBO over the last five years is Lightwater Valley Theme Park, Ripon, North Yorkshire. This is a central location within the UK and offers some fantastic facilities (including toilets and catering) which takes a considerable pressure off the organizers. As the NBO is a charitable, non-profit making event, the owner of Lightwater Valley theme park kindly donate the use of their facilities to us. The theme park also offers reduced admission to the theme park to all NBO attendees.
The last seven NBO's (2003 to 2010) have raised over £50,000 for charity.
With the aid of volunteers from both Cumbrian Scoobs who act as marshal’s, the organizers are able to park 400 cars in only a couple of hours with military precision.
Many different events are held during the day including many different Subaru car classes that are expertly judged to find the best cars at the show and the best Club Stand. The Club stands will be judged during the day, with the winners being awarded the prestigious title of 'Northern Big One, Club Stand of the Year.
Cumbrian Scoobs. LADS, CADS, SMACS, West Midlands ,Simply Subaru Club, TTS, NESF, WYIOC, SSSC, D&G , Ayrshire Scoobies and The Wagon section will all be eagerly competing for the award of Club Stand of the Year.
